Newport to Bermuda Yacht Race
Taking place on even-numbered years and taking participants across 720 miles of open ocean between Newport, Rhode Island and Bermuda, the Newport to Bermuda Yacht Race was first held in 1906, creating a long legacy of yachting prowess since that time.
Bringing together some of the finest yachts in the world to compete, the event always makes for a great experience for locals and visitors alike when they take in the final leg of the race as boats begin to make port in Bermuda.
Argo Gold Cup Sailing
The Argo Gold Cup Sailing event attracts some of the best sailors from around the world, and takes place each year in Hamilton Harbour in front of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.
This event offers a premiere opportunity to see skilled captains in action as they work against winds, choppy water, and one another as they compete for the $100,000 prize purse.
The 2014 event will kick off on October 21st on Hamilton Harbour.
Cup Match Cricket Classic
This event isn’t specifically designed for visitors, but the two day event is a must-see if you want to experience a truly Bermudian time. The two-day cricket game see teams from each end of the island — Somerset and St. George’s — match up against each other.
If you don’t understand cricket, don’t panic, neither do many of the people that attend, as Cup Match is more than a cricket game. Held at either the Somerset Cricket Club or the St. George’s Cricket Club [they alternate each year], the field takes on a party atmosphere with vendors, food and “camps” run by local families and groups.
Cup Match falls on a two day national holiday in Bermuda, which serves to celebrate the abolition of slavery on August 1st, 1883 in all British colonies. It normally falls in late July or early August, and in 2014 Cup Match will be held on July 31 and August 1st, while in 2015 it will be celebrated on July 30 and July 31st.
